Charlie on The Cloud G/SP-015 in Cheshire

Mountain Goats

Charlie Jordan G0PZO, from Birkenhead reached MG status on 20th January 2007, with activations of the popular pair of hills Moel y Gamelin GW/NW-042 and Cyrn-y-Brain GW/NW-043, which sit either side of the Ponderosa Cafe on Horseshoe Pass (A542) in North East Wales.

Charlie began his SOTA activities with another North-East Wales hill, Moel Famau GW/NW-042, back in September 2002. Since then, Charlie has gone on to activate over 230 times on over 120 unique summits, including in Scotland and the Isle of Man, but mainly in the Lake District and Snowdonia areas.

Ian Eastham G7KXV, from Preston has become the the fastest ever to reach Mountain Goat status. Ian only started in January 2006 with an activation of Pendle Hill G/SP-005, and took little more than a year to rack up his one
thousand points. He and reached the MG landmark on Pen-y-ghent G/NP-010 on 29th January 2006, coincidentally his 200th SOTA activation.

Steve activating Mynydd Enlli GW/NW-072, Bardsey Island

Steve Green G1INK, from Buxton, has been a Mountain Goat for some time, but recently made his 10,000th QSO from a SOTA summit!

Steve is well-known in SOTA circles for his love of making a huge number of contacts from each activation (and his dislike of entering his contacts in the database and catching-up with his logbook!). Like most other Mountain Goats, Steve continues participating in SOTA beyond the landmark achievement, and has now recorded over 1800 activator points from over 390 summit expeditions.

• The 'Mountain Goat' Award is awarded to radio amateurs in the Summits on the Air (SOTA) programme who reach 1,000 points by activating qualifying hills
