Ofcom statement on 24 GHz Automotive RadarOfcom have issued a statement following their recent consultation on 24 GHz Automotive Short Range Radar. Ofcoms proposals will make it mandatory for automotive radar systems to be automatically de-activated when the driver enters a designated zone around radio astronomy observatories. There was only one response to the consultation which was a joint one by RSGB, UKuG and AMSAT-UK. Ofcom said they were allowing a slightly more permissive exemption for the period 30 June 2007 and 27 February 2008 than the EU Commission Decision 2005/50/EC specifies. They claimed only a small number of vehicles would be affected. The RSGB/UKuG/AMSAT-UK joint response said "We would also highlight that in addition to the 2009 24GHz SRR progress review that Ofcom refers to, another regulatory amendment to tighten high angle radiated emissions is also due by end of 2009 to maintain compliance with Article-4, Para-3 of EU decision 2005/50/EC. We would appreciate a more timely start to implement this." In the statement Ofcoms response was: "3.7 We note the comment and intend to implement the changes as required by the Decision."
