Automotive Electromagnetic CompatibilityThe increasing use of of complex electronics and software to control modern automobiles raises new design challenges such as Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC). Radio Amateurs are well aware how poorly designed electronic equipment can malfunction in the presence of RF fields. A paper written by Keith Armstrong of Cherry Clough Consultants covers a a number of issues regarding Automotive control and EMC. It describes how unintended acceleration problems can be caused by electronics either due to Electromagnetic Interference (EMI), software “bugs” or lead-free soldering. It notes that lead-free soldering soldering can cause Tin Whiskers, Brittle Solder Joints, Tin Pest and Weaken Components from the higher soldering temperatures. You can read the paper at
