German action on Plasma TV interferenceA case of radio interference caused by a Plasma TV provides a good example of how interference issues should be addressed by a regulator. A German TV station carried a news report that described how radio amateur Gerhard Peuser DL3OCL found high levels of noise on his short wave radio which was making reception difficult. He used a portable radio to find out where the interference came from and reported it to BNetzA (German Regulatory Authority for Telecommunications, Postal Services, Railways, Electricity). One of the duties of BNetzA is to ensure that frequencies are free for their intended uses, OFCOM carries out a similar role in the UK. The BNetzA undertook measurements on the TV and the owner got a letter banning him from using the Plasma TV or else he would get a fine. The manufacturer of the TV denied the interference but they did supply the customer with a TV of a different model. The news report featured the Deutscher Amateur Radio Club (DARC) Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) spokesperson Ulfried Ueberschar DJ6AN and a representative from BNetzA. A video of the broadcast can be seen at The DARC have also been concerned about the radio interference caused by Power Line Communications (PLC) and further information can be found on their web page 'Powerline ...neine danke' at http://tinyurl.com/DARC-PLC There are two articles that highlight the interference problems of PLC and "Homeplug" type home networking devices: Interference instead of shortwave broadcast by Ulfried Ueberschar DJ6AN and Thilo Kootz DL9KCE Practical Experience Gained from Five Different Inhouse PLC Modems by Thilo Kootz DL9KCE UKQRM is a group fighting this radio interference How to report PLC / PLA / PLT / BPL radio interference Spectrum Defence Fund announced
