Ofcom - Fibre capacity in access networks

On Wednesday the UK regulator Ofcom published a report on the capacity and potential of next generation fibre broadband networks.

The report considers the possible speeds that next generation broadband could deliver as well as some of the future applications it could support.

One of the network architectures described is Fibre-to-the-cabinet (FTTC) in which the fibre is only run to street cabinets instead of to the home. The link from cabinet to the home is achieved by transmitting a wide-band signal across the HF radio spectrum using VDSL technology.
This is an inferior solution producing a far slower broadband link that the Ultra-Fast speeds attainable by using Fibre-to-the-home (FTTH).
