Perth celebrates 50 years as City of Light
Perth will today mark 50 years since it was dubbed the City of Light by an American astronaut, Australia's ABC News reports.
John Glenn was orbiting the earth in the Friendship 7 spacecraft in 1962 when the people of Perth turned on their lights to acknowledge his mission.
The city was visible from space and then nicknamed.
A public event will be held in the Northbridge Piazza today to mark the occasion.
It will include a live amateur radio hook-up to the International Space Station as it orbits the earth http://www.abc.net.au/news/2012-02-20/city-of-lights-marks-50-years/3840284?section=wa
