New Icom A24 Aviation NAV/COM Handheld

Icom America has just introduced the IC-A24 aviation handheld nav/com transceiver. With a rugged, lightweight body and impressive features, this radio offers pilot-friendly features at a price that they will find hard to resist.

Listening to the pilot population and incorporating their wants, needs and desires into the Icom product line is one of the ways Icom keeps their products on the leading edge of the market and at the top of the pilot’s want list.

“If you look at all the exciting new features that we were able to include in our new A24, seasoned handheld veterans will see that we did our homework,” explains Rick Waedekin, National Sales Manager for Icom America. “With the new A24, we took into account all the feedback we received on our product line, and [now] deliver with an impressively easy to use handheld nav/com.”

The IC-A24, and its com-only counterpart, the A6, follow the release in previous years of the ever-popular A23 and A5 series of Icom handheld radios. Just as those products broke new ground with pilot-friendly features, the A24 continues the tradition with even more of the most pilot-requested features.

New features on the A24 and A6 Icom units include:

“FliP FloP Plus” channel recall function that allows pilots to recall the ten most recently used channels with the touch of a button;
A dedicated 121.5 MHz emergency key, to allow pilots fast and easy access to the emergency channel;
The ability to simultaneously charge and operate from an external power source, allowing pilots extra utility in the cockpit;
New, larger and easier to read alphanumeric LCD display, which doubles the size of the frequency digital display from the A23 line for easier reading in the cockpit;
Large, easy to use keypad for fast frequency entry;
A larger, easier to hear speaker.
More battery options. Choose from a traditional optional Ni-Cd, the standard and reliable Ni-MH, and the lightweight, long-lasting Li-Ion. An AA alkaline battery case is also optional.

“Clearly, we are setting a new benchmark for the handheld market with the A24 and A6,” explains Waedekin. “Our customers expect us to produce the best handhelds in the market, and we take that expectation very seriously. As an example, the BNC antenna connection on the radio is convenient for the pilot, since it makes it easy to hook up to the aircraft antenna without having to use loss-inducing adapters.”

Some of the key features that are included in the A24 and A6 include a large, 200 channel memory, allowing pilots to enter in numerous frequencies and six letter names for easy use, side tone, which when used with just about any aviation headset, allows pilots to hear what they are saying during transmissions, the ability to receive NOAA weather broadcasts across the country, and automatic noise limiting, which helps to cut down engine noise while in the air.

Icom’s new A24 and A6 come with the following standard equipment:

Battery pack
Belt clip
Wall charger
Antenna
Handstrap

Icom’s new A24 has a few extras:

Carrying case
Headset adapter

With the addition of these items, Icom assures that the A24 and A6 are ready to go, and can be used by pilots immediately after being taken out of the box and connected to a power source.

Approximate street price of the A24 is $430, and $330 for the A6.
