Maplins - WT-417 PMR-446 to 70cm

Fred G4ZWI posted the following email to the GQRP Yahoo reflector.

It seems Maplins are selling WT-417 handhelds (Part number is A95CQ) which are identical internally to the Telcom TE157.

These can be easily configured to give half a watt output on 69 FM simplex channels on 70cm. They come complete with charger and NiMH cells for just £29:99 a pair!

Maplins WT-417 PMR-446 to 70cms....

Hi all, I have just finished tweaking a pair of pmr handhelds, purchased on offer at Maplin Electronics. The part number is A95CQ.

They are the same units inside as the Telcom TE157, and so are a doddle to mod to give you switchable 10mw or 500mw output, 69 simplex channels on 70cms, plus selectable back to 446, and come complete with charger, niMH cells, and hands free kit.

They are reduced to £29.99, and all details for mod can be found if you 'Google' Telcom TE157 mods. They have CTCSS tones.

Just one note, if you intend to replace the niMH with higher capacity, the lefthand-most cell (looking in battery compartment) has to have a quarter inch or so of insulation removed to complete the charging circuit, (stops you recharging dry cells!!).

Sure it is not too difficult to remove 'rubber duck' and fit a bnc socket for better antenna

Cheers & 72 Fred G4ZWI GQRP 10981
