SARL dedicates 2006 as Year of the YouthThe South African Radio League has dedicated 2006 to develop an interest in amateur radio amongst the youth. Some exciting activities are being planned involving young people in various projects. Amateur Radio Mirror International will from 22 January include a new slot called youth radio. A weekly youth on the air net is in the planning stage and will start operation as the schools in all provinces reopen. To assist clubs to recruit more young people in their RAE courses, the SARL and the South African Amateur Radio Development Trust have introduced the YARP programme offering bursaries to scholars and students. Details about the Youth in Amateur Radio Programme (YARP) can be found on www.amateurradio.org.za. In the first SARL letter mailed to all clubs at the end of November, Clubs were invited to submit nominations. Currently 20 bursaries are available. As fund raising efforts are ongoing more bursaries will be made available. The bursaries will be allocated in order of application date. The YARP fund was started by a R20 000 donation from Nico van Tonder, ZR6VT. The SARL and the Trust thanks Nico for his generosity and support to develop Amateur Radio. Contributions to the YARP fund can be paid into the Trust account at ABSA, account number 560 142 722, branch code 335 645. Please send an email to saardt@intekom.co.za with your name, address and deposit details. Courtesy of The South African Radio League
