BPL In-House update

While a lot of attention has rightly focussed on Broadband over Powerlines and the harmful and substantial interference it can cause, this may not be the case with In-House BPL.

When transmitted over powerlines, it is called Access BPL, while just using the internal wiring of building it is referred to as In-House BPL.

This internal application of the technology is being used in Australia and elsewhere.

For example, Brisbane's Treasury Casino in a heritage building is using In-House BPL because it was not permitted to drill holes and install ducting for conventional network cabling.

A retirement village in suburban Melbourne is another where it was not practical to install fibre-optic cabling for broadband services such as video on demand now being enjoyed by its residents. It is using the village's underground power cables.

In another development, the British journal, Electronics Weekly reports a new chip PLT050 produced by SiConnect that can be installed in a slightly larger mains power plug to provide interconnection via BPL. It uses four carriers on the HF radio spectrum, but these are supposedly at such micro power levels as to not cause excessive RF emissions.

In the US the Home-Plug version of In-House BPL notches out amateur radio HF bands too.
