Glowing report for school amateur radio club

Silcoates School in Wakefield, UK recently underwent an inspection by the Independent Schools Inspectorate, and the school's amateur radio activities received a glowing report.

Inspectors visited the school’s amateur radio club on two occasions during the four day inspection, and commented on the pupils’ knowledge of the equipment, and also the awareness of different cultures they have gained through amateur radio. Inspectors were able to see the Silcoates pupils speaking in German and Spanish and the young operators were able to tell them about the hobby. The inspectors also noted that the school’s amateur radio activity provided cross-curricular links with science, geography and languages.

Nigel Wears, M0NJW, founder of the school’s amateur radio club, said: "I am delighted that the inspectors recognised what radio amateurs already know - that the hobby is a terrific way to broaden your perception of the world. I hope that our report gives heart to those in our hobby at work in education to develop their clubs in schools.”
