International Space Station on Echolink TuesdayThe forthcoming International Space Station contact with students at Northlawn and St. Anthony in Streator, IL, USA, on Tuesday 16 Jan at 17:28 UTC should be available via Echolink on both the AMSAT node 101 377 and JK1ZRW node 277 208 Martyn Medcalf G1EFL/M0VAM used the Echolink facility to listen to the previous ARISS school link up and he has written this report of the event. Trevor M5AKA emailed me about the Sherman Elementary School International Space Station contact which was to take place on 8thth January 2007. I made a note of the node number and I thought that if I have time, I would have a listen. I was working in Southminster, Essex on the 8th so I pulled over and put my mini mag mount aerial on the car, connected it to my VX5R, called up the node via the Chelmsford Echolink node MB7IDA on 144.8375 MHz (110.9 Hz CTCSS) and left it on the dashboard. Nothing!! The event was due to start at aprox 14.33pm. I thought perhaps I had the wrong day. I left it on and started to drive away from Southminster to my next call when suddenly I heard an American talking. He was checking with the Space Station Expedition 14 to confirm that they were ready for the children’s questions from Sherman Elementary School in New York. The contact was direct between stations NA1SS & W2SKY. The children asked the questions one at a time and the reply was from ISS Flight Engineer Sunita Williams KD5PLB. This was a 1st for me and I was very impressed by the whole event. The children all spoke very clearly and the answers from Sunita were also very clear. There were 20 questions, a couple of examples were, What kind of foods do you eat in space? Do you see shooting stars? I cannot remember the answers, but the whole event was so interesting.
