South African rookie contester wins 2006 WPX Contest

After only having been licensed to operate phone for a few weeks Rhynhardt Louw, ZS6DBX, entered the rookie category of the annual CQ WPX phone contest and walked away with flying colours.

He achieved the winning position with 3,7 million points.
The nearest rival was UA9JDP with 3,1 million points. The nearest US contestant was AB3CX with just over one million points.

The CQ WPX Contest runs for 48 hours and has the objective for radio amateurs to make contact with as many other radio amateurs in the world as possible. To enter the Rookie category one has to be licensed for three years or less.

As a single operator, all bands, high power station, Rhynhardt was also placed third in Africa.

Four other South African stations submitted log sheets for the contest. Barney Fourie, ZS4U, participated as a single operator, high power station on 15 metres and made over 3,3 million points, placing him first in Africa and sixth in the world.

The other South African stations are Peter, ZS5ZZ, in the single operator, all band high power category, Jan, ZS4JAN, in the single operator, all band low power category and Oleg, ZS9Z, in the single operator, low power 15 metre band category.

Barney, Rhynhardt, Jan and Oleg will receive certificates from CQ Amateur Radio magazine.
