Lottery grant for UK Amateur Radio society

A 50-year old amateur radio society has been given a new lease of life thanks to a grant from the National Lottery's Awards For All programme.

Stevenage and District Amateur Radio Society (SADARS) has been awarded £2,500 to buy equipment that will enable it to keep running its radio courses. With the money, it has been able to buy a state-of-the-art laptop, a projector and to help with the costs of some of its disabled and elderly members.

Kenneth Blanshard, 56, a member of SADARS said: "It means we can carry out the courses without disruption and without having to beg, borrow or steal equipment. I'm due to retire soon and as we had to borrow equipment from where I work that would have become a problem."

SADARS has around 70 members ranging in age from seven to 98 who all have the opportunity to take foundation, intermediate and advanced amateur radio courses. Since 2002 the society has seen 127 members pass exams.

Kenneth added: "It means we can continue to provide a facility where we can continue to train people in the Herts area and beyond."

The group, which meets weekly in the Stevenage Resource Centre, recently celebrated its 50th anniversary and with the added boost given by the National Lottery fund, it looks set to run for another 50 years
