G3CWI gains SOTA 'Mountain Goat' awardRichard Newstead G3CWI became a 'Mountain Goat' while in the Isle of Man on 24th November 2006. Richard took the ferry across with son Lewis for a weekend activating all five of the SOTA summits on the island. However, it was only the first summit of the five that was required as Richard was poised on 999 activator points at the start of the weekend. This point was gained in torrential rain on Mull Hill GD/GD-005, Richard taking shelter in a pill box on the summit as he operated on his preferred CW. A series of entertaining films about Richard's Isle of Man SOTA weekend
is available on YouTube on the internet. Mull Hill was Richard's 401st SOTA activation; he has done a huge amount of activations including over 250 'Unique' hills and activations in the G, GW, GM, GD and EI associations. It was Richard who along with John Linford G3WGV formulated the SOTA programme back in 2002, and he is the first member of the SOTA Management Team to achieve Mountain Goat status. (A photograph of Richard on Arenig Fawr GW/NW-011 is attached). Congratulations also to John Clifford GW4BVE, who attained 'Mountain Goat' on 28th December 2006 with an activation of Long Mountain-Beacon Ring GW/MW-026.
