Aircraft hacking fears

A BBC News report highlights fears that airline passengers may be able to hack into the flight system on the new Boeing 787.

The BBC report dated 9th January says:

Boeing has been ordered to ensure passengers on its new 787 Dreamliner jet cannot hack into the flight system and take control of the plane.

The ruling has come from America's Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), which is concerned that the plane's computer system may be vulnerable.

Boeing said it was in constant dialogue with the FAA to resolve the issue.

The BBC report doesn't say exactly how passengers could hack into the aircraft's flight system given that a passenger would be carrying little more than a WiFi enabled laptop with them. Fortunately Wired.Com in an earlier report dated 4th January provide some additional information:

According to the FAA document published in the Federal Register (mirrored at Cryptome.org), the vulnerability exists because the plane's computer systems connect the passenger network with the flight-safety, control and navigation network. It also connects to the airline's business and administrative-support network, which communicates maintenance issues to ground crews.
