New strongman at No 10
Former head of Ofcom to be political chief of staff
Gordon Brown yesterday implicitly acknowledged the indecision that has
haunted much of his first six months in Downing Street by appointing the
former head of Ofcom to act as his political chief of
staff at No 10.
Stephen Carter, chief executive of Brunswick, the City
public relations and lobbying firm, will oversee policy development, communications
and political strategy for Brown.
Carter will be given the formal title of prime minister's chief of strategy
and principal adviser, on a salary of £137,000 a year.
