Darkest hour for 'smallest state'

Documents just de-classified by the National Archives show that at one time officials wanted to destroy the Principality of Sealand located off the Essex coast.

In 1967 Roy Bates, a former Army major, took over a World War II fortress in International waters seven miles off the Essex coast and declared it an independent state.

The BBC report says that newly released papers from 1978 reveal a diplomatic row with Germany and Foreign Office officials, who were so incensed that they called for the Navy to knock the 10,000 sq ft platform into the sea.
