Novice Historical Society

A website has been set up to celebrate the USA Novice License which ran from 1951 to 2000.

The Novice Historical Society was founded to preserve the Novice experience which they consider as an important aspect of the history of amateur radio in the USA.

The website can be seen at

The US Novice license permitted operation on segments of the HF bands with up to 200 watts DC input power (about 140 watts output at 70% efficiency). In its day it proved very popular in introducing newcomers to Amateur Radio and was straightforward to obtain.

The Novice license attracted a number of youngsters such as Elizabeth Deck KN6MTQ who got her Novice ticket in 1958 at the age of 8 and Sarah Bruno KB9SEG who was just 4 years old when she passed her written exam and 5 wpm morse test in 1998.

Although Novices were allowed the use of HF at a reasonable power level (200 watts input) they were restricted to CW only on HF until 1987 when SSB was permitted between 28.3-28.5 MHz. The 1990's were an era of rapidly developing global communications provided by Cell (mobile) Phones and the Internet and the Novice license lost its appeal. The numbers taking the Novice declined rapidly and eventually the FCC discontinued it in 2000.
