TV giveaway to fund high-speed internet

The UK newspaper the Sunday Times reports that Ofcom may scrap plans for an auction of the UHF 'Digital Dividend' TV frequencies.

The article by James Ashton reports that Communications Minister Stephen Carter, formally of Ofcom, is examining proposals to give away spectrum to companies in exchange for a pledge to invest nationally in super-fast broadband access.

The United Kingdom currently has five companies operating cellphone networks, Vodafone, O2, Orange, T-Mobile, Orange and '3' (Hutchison 3G)

Scrapping the auction process could make it difficult for new companies to enter the wireless telecomms market in the UK.
