RF-based TV remote runs forever on single cell

Electronics Weekly magazine has an article on a new wireless TV remote developed by GreenPeak Technologies.

Thanks to the use of low energy technology, the GreenPeak remote control would only require a single battery during it's entire lifetime.

The remote makes use of the Zigbee 2.4 GHz wireless standard and this type of technology is applicable to many household applications.

Historically devices such as Doorbells, Central Heating controls, Garage openers and Key fobs have used frequencies in the Amateur Radio 70cm band between 433.050 - 434.790 MHz.

However, the use of these frequencies, as well as being inefficient in their use of energy, can be prone to disruption from Ofcom licenced users.

It is to be hoped that manufacturers will now take advantage of low energy modules based on Zigbee such as those developed by GreenPeak Technologies.
