London Underground modernisation for 2012 Olympics

On Tuesday, 12th January, Mark M0IEO will give a talk to the Chelmsford Amateur Radio Society (CARS) on the London Underground system.

How many of you have used the underground railway in London either to get to work or at the weekend for a day out in London?

Have you ever stopped to wonder how the system, which was first opened in 1863 is kept running?

How is maintenance carried out on tunnels, which in places are nearly 150 years old?

As the infrastructure grows older it requires more work to keep the system running and with the eyes of the World being cast on London in 2012 with the Olympics coming to town, it is time to spruce the underground up and bring it up to date.

The showcase of the underground is Oxford Circus station which is coming to the end of an £80 Million refurbishment, but with the station open to the public from 06:00 to 00:30hrs seven days a week, how does the work get done?

From rewiring to new walls and floors and 21st century security, it all takes time. Add to all that the creation of a new railway in east London and the fact that there are major refurbishments of all the main underground stations within central London, that is a lot of work in a short space of time.

And what of the places on the underground that the public do not get to see? There are as many miles of closed off tunnels and walkways on the underground that the public have no access to, as there are public access tunnels and platforms. Just what does go on beneath your feet at night when the trains stop running?

The talk takes place on Tuesday January 12 at the
Marconi Social Club (MASC), Beehive Lane, Great Baddow, Chelmsford, CM2 9RX.

The doors open at 7:10 pm and the meeting gets underway at 7:30 pm. Car parking is free and a bar is available for refreshments.
