SOTA Winter Bonus

The winter bonus period is underway for the SOTA (Summits on the Air) associations in the British Isles, and many of those in continental Europe also.

For the UK associations - G, GW, GM, GI & GD - the bonus period began on 1st December and continues until 15th March. Activations of summits that are 500m ASL or higher (ie those worth 2 points and upwards) attract a bonus of three points.

Some summits in North East Wales, Shropshire and the Peak District enjoy increased SOTA activity during this period as they offer relatively straightforward access, and in some cases may be easily combined with a nearby summit to make a ten point day.

• Particular care should be taken, and attention given to the local weather forecast, as conditions can change instantly even on the lower hills, and some of the local roads may not be treated against ice.
