Hutt River Province Principality - heard of it?

This kingdom, located just north of Geraldton, Western Australia, claimed self-government 35 years ago.

Today it survives on tourist based economy. The Australian Government does not recognise its claim of independence. Here with news of an interesting development is Jim Linton VK3PC.

The Hutt River Province Director-General, Ministry of Electronic Communications, Eddie De Young has announced plans to set up a short-wave broadcast station. He says its programming will be primarily nostalgic material including old radio dramas.

Hutt River Province is trying to gain United Nations recognition which would in turn enable the International Telecommunications Union to issue it with a block of radio callsigns. The Hotel Five prefix has been nominated.

Other matters on the wish list are DXCC entity status and membership of the International Amateur Radio Union.

Eddie De Young says, in anticipation of success, applications are now open for non-resident founding charter members of the local radio clubs, the Royal Amateur Radio Society, with membership privileges including a single-letter suffix ham callsign.

And Broadband over Powerlines, BPL, has been banned by the Hutt River Province and will definitely not be radiating harmful radio interference from within its borders.
