Icom
Sponsors Live 8 Amateur Radio Station
Radio communication company, Icom (UK) Ltd together with the Worthing
Amateur Radio Club are putting on a Live 8 Amateur Radio station in support
of the concerts taking place around the globe
The station has been given a special call sign by the Radio Society
of Great Britain GB8MPH (GB8 Make Poverty History). GB8MPH
will be taking place between the 2nd and 3rd July of 2005 at the Worthing
Steam Gardens in Sussex.
Amateur radio plays an important role in the developing world, as it
is often the only way people in poor or sparsely populated areas of the
world can communicate with each other. In many parts of the developing
world there is no Internet or mobile phone coverage. Therefore the only
way that people can communicate with each other is by Amateur Radio.
Phil Hadler, Managing Director of Icom (UK) Ltd said,
'Icom fully supports the aims of Live 8 in the goal of highlighting the
global issue of poverty. One of the main aims of this station will be
to contact all parts of the globe, especially those isolated areas and
to show solidarity with the ideals of Live 8. In our own way the project
will be representing the large population of Amateur Radio enthusiasts
across the world in saying that we care about the global issue of poverty.
There is no better way for Amateur Radio enthusiasts to support this event
than by getting involved by contacting this station. To celebrate this
event, a specially made celebration QSL card will be produced and sent
to all people who communicate with GB8MPH.'
Kelvan Gale, chairman of Worthing Amateur Radio Club said, 'We are very
proud to be putting on this special Amateur Radio Station for Live 8.
We are working closely together with Icom who have supplied us with top
of the range base radios. These radios give us the capacity to contact
other parts of the world'. He added, 'The station will go on throughout
the weekend and we intend to have a rota of 6 operators working all weekend
contacting other radio enthusiasts around the world.
Note to Amateur Radio Enthusiasts.
GB8MPH will be operating on the 40 m, 20 m and 2m operating bands.
