Pirates arrested under new Florida law

Federal and state authorities shut down two pirate stations and arrested two men they said were interfering with licensed stations.

Authorities believe the arrests are the first under Florida's new pirate law, legislation prohibiting unauthorized transmission to or interference with licensed radio stations.

Agents from the Florida Department of Law Enforcement and the FCC acted on a complaint Thursday from WKPX(FM), run by Piper High School students in Sunrise, Fla.

Authorities told the Miami Herald they tracked two pirate stations operating out of a Ft. Lauderdale apartment by discovering coaxial cable running between the unit and two antennas mounted on the building's roof.

Agents seized a 10 kW transmitter, an antenna, a mixer board, a computer, phones and other equipment, according to the account.
