OFCOM subsidies to RSGB to end
Trevor M5AKA

Back in mid-2004 it was clear that OFCOM's intent was to end all the subsidies that it was paying to the RSGB and we have recently had confirmation that this is so.

The £30K that OFCOM pays RSGB for Repeater/Datacomms licensing will finish at the end of 2005, see http://www.southgatearc.org/news/jul2005/region12_questions.htm

The RSGB have also announced in a newsletter to Course Tutors that they will be losing their £46K a year subsidy for running the Foundation, Intermediate and Advanced Exams.

It has been estimated that it currently costs over £200 for someone to take the courses and exams for the Foundation, Intermediate and Advanced. This cost now rises even further since RSGB have announced that from the 1st September the new exam fees will be:

Foundation: £20
Intermediate: £30
Advanced: £35

Perhaps consideration should be given to streamlining the examination process to cut costs.

Another subsidy that OFCOM provide to RSGB is for Special Event Station licences. This is also coming to an end so expect to have to pay for Special Event calls in the future.
