VK and ZL net controllers needed

The VoIP Weather Net is group of radio amateurs worldwide who utilise Amateur VoIP technologies such as IRLP and EchoLink to provide emergency communications and to aid in the reporting of severe weather to authorities.

"The most common activity that the VoIP Weather Net takes part in is reporting of severe weather conditions during hurricanes in and around North America to the US National Hurricane Centre in Miami.

However, the net has also assisted in other non weather disasters such as the search for debris following the Space Shuttle Columbia accident in 2003.

Although the net has handled mostly US based disasters so far, the facilities and personnel are willing to help out anywhere in the world, if asked. The VoIP Weather net makes use of a special integrated IRLP/EchoLink conference server to bring the different VoIP networks together seamlessly.

Every week the VoIP Weather Net meets at 0000z on Sundays on IRLP 9219 and WX_TALK on EchoLink.
In addition, SWLs can listen to streaming audio on http://live.vkradio.com:7170/ during the weekly net.

During the northern hurricane season, the net is kept busy maintaining a watch for stations in areas affected by hurricanes, with a few hurricanes having already occurred this year. With all this activity, the net is in need of a few Net Control stations from VK to assist with running the net
during the overnight hours in the US, as the net operates around the clock during emergency situations. The net is looking for Net Controls with an interest in severe weather spotting, emergency communications and who have access to EchoLink and/or IRLP, as well as reliable Internet access.

For more information on the VoIP Weather Net, go to http://www.voipwx.net Also, check out the VoIP-WXNET Yahoo group while you're browsing the site.

Prospective Net Controls are strongly encouraged to join the weekly net and make their presence known, as well as participate in the Yahoo group. Also, you can email questions about the net, especially with regards to the role VK/ZL Amateurs can play, to vk3jed@optusnet.com.au "
