Germans to pay to access broadcasts on computers and mobile phonesThe weekly German magazine Der Spiegel reports that, from the beginning of next year, Germans will have to pay a receiving fee to access radio and TV programmes on computers and mobile phones. In future, computers connected to the Internet and mobiles with UMTS will be regarded as modern receiving devices, and the state can therefore ask for a monthly fee of 17.03 euros. Private consumers who already have a radio and TV licence will not have to pay for using these “extra receivers” in their own home, but many companies can expect to be billed. This includes workplaces where employees listen to radio and TV via computer while working. But even small businesses, such as a baker whose cash desk has a computer with an Internet connection, will be expected to pay a licence fee, even if it isn’t being used for entertainment. Der Spiegel says that many people, especially retailers, are protesting the measure. Source: Media Network
