NAB petitions FCC to allow FM transmitters as AM backup

The National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) in the US has petitioned the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to allow some AM broadcasters to also operate low power translator stations as a “fill-in service” to retransmit their AM signal. This facility would only be used in areas where the AM stations have gaps in their coverage or within 25 miles of the station’s transmitter.

The NAB explains its reasoning for the request by pointing out that AM stations suffer more from electrical interference, and some have to use highly directional antennas to prevent interference to other stations on the same frequency. The NAB is also thinking ahead to the situation after Daylight Savings Time in the US is extended next year. It points out that those stations which have to reduce their power after sunset will be on reduced power during peak drive times.

“Providing service to listeners on AM radio can be difficult,” says the NAB. “AM stations, more than almost all other services, must deal with various technical challenges to deliver a high quality signal to listeners, especially at night.”
