Special prefix for 60th anniversary of Amateur Radio in Syria

2007 is the 60th anniversary of Amateur Radio in Syria and to celebrate the event Syrian Amateurs will be able to use the special prefix 6C60 from October 15th until November 15th.

In 1947, a group of Syrian Radio Amateurs established the Technical Institute of Radio (TIR).

Mr. Rashid Jalal YK1AA was the first President, a post he held until 1983. He passed away in April 1991 and it was decided to name the TIR club station after him, so the club call became YK0RJ.

Over the years the number of Radio Amateurs declined until in 1975, only YK1AA remained, however, numbers have picked up from that low point. According to IARU statistics there were 7 Amateur stations in Syria in 2000.

The 35th anniversary in 1982 was the first time that the prefix 6C was used by Syrian Amateurs but that was only for one week.

Interestingly, the morse test wasn't introduced in Syria until 1986.
