Amateur Radio Satellite RS-15 heard again

RS-15 was launched on 26 December 1994 from the Baikonur Cosmodrome. It has since ceased operating, but there have been reports that its 10 metre beacon can be heard once more.

It was launched into a very useful 2165 by 1885 km orbit with an inclination of 64.59 degrees. This orbit gave very good coverage and its 2 metre to 10 metre transponder permitted low power DX working using very simple equipment.

Henk PA3GUO had a go at listening for the satellite and posted this email to the AMSAT-BB reflector:

As it had been over 10 years that I had heard this satellite I decided to give it a go.

Using the TS-2000 and a simple 14MHz dipole, no pre-amp, I was able to hear the beacon. Quite weak, but audible. Frequency as in the report; 29.3156 MHz (assume this to be Beacon 1).

On my website I have placed an mp3 recording and some 'waterfall' graphics: http://www.qsl.net/pa3guo

You hear and see the beacon being switched on (~2 seconds) and off (~3 seconds). Also you hear & see the beacon 'tuning in' to the correct frequency every time
it's switched on.

Looking forward for your comments/feedback/experiences !

Henk, PA3GUO

• All of RS-15's electronic onboard equipment was designed and built by a group of radio amateurs from Kaluga (180 km SW Moscow) under the leadership of Aleksander Papkov. Further RS-15 information is available at
