SOTA by microwave

Richard Newstead G3CWI continues to lead the way with pioneering '10G' in SOTA.

Richard's set-up for 10GHz involves his FT-817, a DB6NT transverter, tripod, horn antenna, plus his well-known
3-element SOTA Beam for the 2m SSB talkback.

Unlike most 10G specialists, Richard is able to pack his complete station into his rucksack, and ascend to summits on foot (or sometimes on a bicycle) as per the SOTA General Rules!

Recent summits activated by Richard on 10GHz include Gun G/SP-013, Brown Clee Hill G/WB-002, Yr Aran GW/NW-019, Moel Hebog GW/NW-014, Snowdon GW/NW-001, Shining Tor G/SP-004, The Cloud G/SP-015 and Cyrn-y-Brain GW/NW-043.

Summits on the Air (SOTA) is an award scheme for radio amateurs and shortwave listeners that encourages portable operation in mountainous areas. SOTA has been carefully designed to make participation possible for everyone - this is not just for mountaineers!

There are awards for activators (those who ascend to the summits) and chasers (who either operate from home, a local hilltop or are even Activators on other summits)
