Oceania DX Contest sees best-ever turnout

The Oceania DX Contest Committee is pleased to advise that the results of the 2008 OCDX Contest have been published.

Participation in the 2008 contest is the highest recorded to date, with 783 logs submitted. This is most encouraging, considering that conditions on the higher bands were generally poor due to the lack of solar activity.

Of particular note is the fantastic turnout from VK stations in the PHONE section - a total of 67 VK PHONE logs were
submitted in 2008 compared to 53 in 2006 and 41 in 2007.

There was also a huge turnout from European Russia stations in the CW section, with a total of 88 logs being submitted. As well as the more common VK, ZL, YB and KH6 stations, there were a number of stations active from some of the rarer Oceania entities, including 9M6, DU, KH2, T88,
V8 and VK9 Norfolk Island.

Congratulations to all the winners and thank you to everyone who participated, even if only to make a one or two QSOs.

Of special note is the performance of Akira Hujimoto JR1VAY who operated the AH2J station to take top position in Oceania for the PHONE Single-Op ALL Band category. This meant that John Loftus VK4EMM was unable to repeat his usual feat of leading Oceania in both the PHONE and CW Single-Op ALL Band categories but he still leads Oceania in the CW Single-Op ALL Band category by a considerable margin.

Also of note is the performance of JA7NVF who has again produced the highest score outside Oceania in the PHONE section, and RD3A who produced the highest score outside Oceania in the CW section.

The next Oceania DX contest will be held on the first two full weekends of October 2009 as follows:

PHONE: 08:00 UTC Saturday 3 October to 08:00 UTC Sunday 4 October
CW: 08:00 UTC Saturday 10 October to 08:00 UTC Sunday 11 October

More information about the contest, including the rules, is available from the Oceania DX Contest web site at

Finally and most importantly, thank you to every one who participated in the 2008 contest and made it such a success. We look forward to seeing you all again, along with new entrants, in the 2009 event.

Let's hope for a few sun spots and better conditions, and make it the biggest and best Oceania DX Contest party yet!
