Shrewsbury school space experiment launched

An experimental package POISE developed by pupils at Shrewsbury School was launched on a Dnepr rocket on Wednesday evening.

The pupils experimental package is part of the UK-DMC2 satellite which was launched from Baikonur Cosmodrome on Wednesday, 29th July 2009 at 18:46 UTC.

The school got the chance to fly the experiment after winning a competition organised by Surrey Satellite Technology Ltd (SSTL) and the British National Space Centre (BNSC).

Their experiment aims to measure variations in the ionosphere, which can affect the accuracy and safety of satellite navigation systems, and might also help to provide indications of impending earthquakes

A video of the Space Experiment Competition award ceremony during the IAC in Glasgow last year shows the winning pupils and also Martin G3YJO who appears at 13:40 and 31:00 into the video, see
