Special ham radio link on Gus Grissom DayA special ham radio link will allow visitors to the Gus Grissom Memorial in Mitchell, Ind.’s Spring Mill State Park to talk with the Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas on Gus Grissom Day, July 24. The state park will host events from 10 a.m. to 11 p.m. These space programs are in remembrance of Virgil I. “Gus” Grissom, a Mercury astronaut born in nearby Mitchell, Ind. The Gus Grissom Memorial at Spring Mill State Park honors the astronaut who was America’s second man in space. The memorial tells about Grissom’s life and contributions to the space program. Artifacts include Grissom’s space suit, one of the space capsules he flew in and personal items from his youth and adulthood. During programs at the park on the special day, visitors can talk to the Johnson Space Center through a special ham radio trailer set up by the Hoosier Hills club. Visitors may also learn about the solar system, hear sounds produced by the sun, look safely at the sun to see solar spots and flares, discover Gus Grissom’s story, and gaze upon the night sky with the Stonebelt Stargazers.
