ACA says 'standby' for new licencesThe Australian Communications Authority has taken action to speed up the implementation of the new three-tier amateur licence system which is already three months behind initial time-lines. The ACA announcement early last month that it was not able to deliver amateur radio regulatory reform before the third-quarter of this year, received a stern response from the Wireless Institute of Australia. The WIA at the member forum associated with its annual general meeting expressed concern at the delay, and particularly as it stalled the introduction of the much anticipated new entry point Foundation Licence. WIA President Michael Owen VK3KI has since secured an undertaking from the ACA acting chairman, Dr Bob Horton that the Foundation, Standard and Advanced Licences will be introduced in the 'quickest time practical'. Dr Horton said there will be two steps in implementing changes for the Amateur Service, with the three tier licence system being first, and the rest of the reforms such as a class licence for visiting overseas radio amateurs to occur at a later time.
