South Africa's President to talk via amateur radio on Youth Day

President Thabo Mbeki will be talking to young people via amateur radio during the SARL Youth for Amateur Radio event on Thursday 16 June 2005.

The President will join the special SARL network from an Exhibition in Kimberley. The Minister of Communication, Dr Ivy Matsepe-Casaburri, will accompany him.
In Johannesburg, the Deputy Minister of Communication, Roy Padayachie, will be present during the link-up at the Sci Bona Science Centre.

"This is the first time that our President is experiencing the magic of Amateur Radio", Graham Hartlett said. "And if anything, we hope that he will take to it as he has to the Internet and that it will be the beginning of his involvement in our hobby".

The activity will start at 09:45. The President will join the network at 10:45 followed by Mark Shuttleworth from 11:00 - 12:00.

Clubs setting up amateur radio stations in public areas and who wish to participate must send full details to armi@sarl.org.za to ensure that they are called in.

Visit the SARL website at www.sarl.org.za daily for updates. Clubs who have registered and supplied a contact email address will be mailed daily with updates on the event.
