Thai community radio stations face shut down

The Thai government has threatened to shut down 41 community radio stations for failing to stick to technical regulations, the Bangkok Post has reported.

The radio stations were accused of violating technical standards which limited transmission power to 30 watts, antenna height to 30 metres and signal reach to 15 kilometres.

The radio stations have been given until 15 June to make the necessary adjustments to meet the technical standards.

The government’s Public Relations Department (PRD) Deputy Chief, Pattareeya Suknamo, said it was unlikely the crackdown would create upheaval as widely feared.

“All 3,000 stations said to be in breach of the rules would not be shut down in one fell swoop,'' Mrs Pattareeya said.

Mrs Pattareeya said the first stations to face closure are those interfering with aviation broadcasting and mainstream radio stations
