New D-Star net takes to the air

And an informal 'D-Star' user's net is now on 14.292 Mhz on Saturdays at 4 p.m. Eastern time.

D-STAR is an open digital protocol published by Japan Amateur Radio League and available to be implemented by anyone.

While much of D-star involves linking and position reporting, it's narrowband mode and digital modulation scheme is a very interesting topic for semi-weak signal mode on VHF simplex.

So far, D-star is only supported commercially by Icom, but its growing popularity means that other companies are bound to come on board.
