Google Earth brings benefits to Radio Hams

After Google released the powerful 'Google Earth' tool a couple of years back, it has opened doors for many applications.

As amateur radio operators, it has opened gates to a tremendous amount of benefits from simple Line of Sight visualization to Layered applications like APRS.

Today one can find lots of information on Internet to use this powerful utility. What's more, Google earth is free to download, with some limitations, http://earth.google.com/

Reporting this story, Kiran, VU3KPL, compiled KML (Keyhole Markup Language used for plotting Google Earth area) on Mumbai at 50 Feet level and the resulting visualization gave him a much better idea on why from certain places one cannot receive VHF contacts with other stations of interest.

It also gives an idea on optimum altitude required for contacts.

Those of you who are interested to learn more about KML can visit http://earth.google.com/kml/kml_tags_21.html
