Microwave for beginners

The UK Microwave Group is planning to launch a series of workshops for newcomers across the country.

The move follows the success of the group’s inaugural Microwave Workshop for Beginners held in Sheffield on 27 May. Some 18 aspiring microwavers from all over the UK attended the event to listen to UK Microwave Group chairman Peter, G3PHO, Peter G3PYB, Barry, G8AGN, and Gordon, G0EWN, present talks on amateur microwave topics.

Peter, G3PHO, kicked off the workshop with a broad overview of amateur microwaves both in the UK and overseas. Peter, G3PYB, then explained how to build simple 10GHz ATV transmit-receive systems using cheap surplus satellite TV gear. Barry, G8AGN, demonstrated how to make and use very simple 10GHz equipment using the old wideband FM techniques. And finally Gordon, G0EWN, did a presentation on simple microwave antennas. The workshop concluded with an outdoor demonstration of 10GHz equipment being used to make duplex contacts across the venue’s car park.

All attendees left with a “goodie bag” containing a CD with over 160MB of microwave information including all the presentations of the day and an article on converting surplus satellite TV LNBs.
