Learn more about 'Whistlers' this Sunday

The President's Net will be on the air this Sunday, 25 June at 19:00. SARL President Graham Hartlett, ZS6GJH, invites all clubs to join the net and to make a link available to their local repeater.

To book a link, send an email to armi@sarl.org.za with the telephone number to be linked. Due to technical reasons cell phones and Telkom prepaid phones cannot be connected.

The Intecnet will follow the President's Net at 20:00 with Prof Arthur Hughes of the University of Natal as the guest speaker. He will talk about VLF whistlers and whistler mode phenomena.

Whistlers are produced by lightning and travel along the Earth's magnetic field line from one hemisphere to the other. In the ionized gas that exists in this region of space, the high frequencies travel faster than the low frequencies, thereby dispersing the wave from the lightning stroke into a whistling tone that decreases in frequency with increasing time, hence the term "whistler."
