Atmel release broadband car radio amp IC's

Modern design trends in the automotive industry are to eliminate 'stick-out' antennas in the same way that the cell phone industry has done in recent years.

In practice this can mean inefficient antennas coupled with a high gain amplifier.

Atmel has released an AM/FM antenna amplifier IC for cars, it features very high gain, up to 35 dB, and unnecessarily wide bandwidth, 150 kHz to 30 MHz and 70 MHz to 166 MHz. Such devices only really need to cover 150 kHz to 1.6 MHz
and 88 to 108 MHz.

Atmels IC additionally covers all the Amateur Radio HF bands as well as the Amateur 70 MHz and 144 MHz VHF bands.

We can guess what will happen to the radios in cars fitted with Atmel IC's when a Radio Amateur driving down the motorway keys up their 50 watt 144 MHz mobile rig !
