On June 6th members of the Chelmsford Amateur Radio Society (CARS) ran a special event station GB96MWT to commemorate 96 years since the Marconi New Street Works was opened in Chelmsford.

In 1898 Marconi established his first wireless factory at Hall Street Chelmsford in a former silk factory.

The company grew rapidly and in June 1912 the Marconi Wireless Telegraph company moved to a purpose built factory in New Street.
A special train brought delegates from the International Radiotelegraph Conference being held in London to Chelmsford for the grand opening.

Over the years the New Street Works was responsible for producing many of the innovations that helped transform worldwide communications.

The club ran an HF station, mostly on 20 metres, from the site and put on a display of Morse Keys. During the day there were over 400 visitors to the station.

CARS run courses for all the Amateur Radio Communications exams. For details contact Clive G1EUC on 01245-224577
