Benjamin Franklin flies his storm kite to prove electricity.

1786 Commercial ice cream manufactured the first time in New York.

1793 The first patent for a stove was issued -- to Robert Haeterick.

1834 Isaac Fischer of Springfield, VT, patents sandpaper.

1844 Vulcanized rubber patented by C.Goodyear of New York City

1869 I.W. McGaffey, Chicago, IL patents the suction vacuum cleaner.

1883 Train service between Sydney and Melbourne begins.

1897 Carl Elsener patents his penknife, becomes the Swiss Army Knife.

1902 Colour TV patented by Otto von Bronk, Germany.

1909 SS Slavonia first to use SOS distress signal, sank off Azores.

1920 First British public broadcast Dame Nellie Melba concert.

1928 Kingsford-Smith arrived in Brisbane, ending trans Pacific flight.

1943 Laslo Biro, Hungary, patents the ball point pen.

1951 First commercial electronic computer, Bur. of Census, USA.
