45th Anniversary of Women in Space

The special event station R45VT has been on the air to commemorate the 45th Anniversary of Valentina Vladimirovna Tereshkova becoming the first woman in space.

On 16th June 1963 she went into space as pilot onboard Vostok 6. Her call sign during the flight was Chaika. She spent 71 hours in space orbiting the Earth 48 times.

On the AMSAT bulletin Board (AMSAT-BB) Robert G8ATE reports working R45VT through the VO-52 Amateur Radio satellite.

Since that time women have made a significant contribution to space exploration and many of them have been licenced Radio Amateurs. A few of the many notable women space explorers since Valentina Tereshkova are:

1983 - Sally Ride, first American woman in space

1991 - Helen Sharman first United Kingdom citizen in space issued with the Amateur Radio call sign GB1MIR

1999 - Eileen Marie Collins KD5EDS, first woman space shuttle commander and Radio Amateur.

2001 - Susan Jane Helms KC7NHZ, first woman crew member of the International Space Station. She stayed there 165 days bringing her total in space to 210 days during five flights. She also was the first woman amateur radio operator to communicate directly with hams on the ground via amateur radio from the International Space Station.

2002 - Dr. Peggy A. Whitson KC5ZTD, Radio Amateur and first woman to spacewalk at the International Space Station.

2003 - Dr. Kalpana Chawla KD5ESI and Dr. Laurel Clark KC5ZSU, both Radio Amateurs, die when the shuttle Columbia disintegrates during re-entry.

2006 - Anousheh Ansari, first Iranian woman in space, spoke to Radio Amateurs on earth using the call sign NA1SS.
