GB70VI - Voluntary Interceptors

In 1939 the radio equipment of all radio amateurs was ordered to be confiscated for the duration of the war, but many amateurs became Voluntary Interceptors in their own homes.

These VIs assisted the Allies in their task of intercepting encrypted Enigma messages transmitted in Morse code, which were then passed to the code breakers at Bletchley Park.

The Scarborough Special Events Group will be on the air as GB70VI during the weekend 27th to 28th June to mark the commencement of the amateur radio Voluntary Interceptors scheme.

This event will coincide with Armed Forces Day on 27 June when Scarborough will be hosting the largest event planned for the region.

It will be an opportunity for everyone to pay tribute to our Armed Forces, past, present and future. Activity will be on HF SSB and CW.

The QSL will feature a photograph of a Navy four-rotor Enigma machine and the QSL route is via the Bureau or direct to club call GØOOO
