events that made history this week - 1667 Jean-Baptiste Denys does first successful blood transfusion, France. 1793 The first patent for a stove was issued -- to Robert Haeterick. 1786 Commercial ice cream manufactured the first time in New York. 1869 I.W. McGaffey, Chicago, IL patents the suction vacuum cleaner. 1897 Carl Elsener patents his penknife, becomes the Swiss Army Knife. 1902 Colour TV patented by Otto von Bronk, Germany. 1909 SS Slavonia first to use SOS distress signal, sank off Azores. 1928 Kingsford-Smith arrived in Brisbane, ending trans Pacific flight. 1943 Laslo Biro, Hungary, patents the ball point pen.
