G.hn home network standard approvedOn Friday, June 11, the ITU-T approved the G.hn home networking standard, but it could mean homes becoming enveloped in a smog of radio pollution. The G.hn standard for next-generation wired home networks was approved by the United Nations International Telecommunication Union (ITU-T) during its Geneva meeting held last week. All three components of the new standard –- the Data Link Layer (G.9961), Physical Layer (G.9960) and coexistence protocol (G.9972) –- are now complete. A single standard for wired home entertainment networks has long been sought by manufacturers but the standard adopted for power lines could ruin peoples enjoyment of their favourite radio show. The new standard envisages transmitting a powerful wideband signal, spanning the HF and VHF radio spectrum, down the household electricity mains. This will inevitably be radiated from the wiring producing a smog of radio pollution that will envelop neighbouring homes. Such systems have been shown to disrupt radio reception in houses over 300 yards away from where the devices are installed.
